England’s women’s team thrashed North Macedonia 8-0 in Sarina Wiegman’s first match as head coach. The Lionesses, who have been on a barren run for over a year, scored five goals before half time.
The england vs north macedonia 2023 is a football match that took place on the 12th of October, 2018. England thrashed North Macedonia by 8-0 in Sarina Wiegman’s first game as manager.
Ella Toone, a Manchester United midfielder, scored the team’s first goal under new manager Sarina Wiegman.
Sarina Wiegman’s debut game in command resulted in a thrashing of North Macedonia in England’s Women’s World Cup qualification campaign opener.
England put up a display in front of over 8,000 spectators at St Mary’s Stadium to usher in a new era.
Ella Toone scored on her debut, while Ellen White and Bethany England both scored twice as substitutes.
Beth Mead’s goal rounded off a fantastic performance, as the visitors also scored two own goals.
England put up a dominating performance, with 48 shots on target and a chance to reach double digits in what seemed like 90 minutes of offensive assault.
White, Lauren Hemp, Nikita Parris, Beth Mead, and Toone all wasted big opportunities, while Jill Scott struck the crossbar in the second half.
North Macedonia, rated 131st in the world, was never put to the test defensively, and the Lionesses just had too much talent.
England now leads their qualifying group, which also includes Northern Ireland, by one point, ahead of Austria, who defeated Latvia 8-1.
Northern Ireland won their first qualifying match 4-0 against Luxembourg, who will face England next on Tuesday, September 21. (19:15 BST).
Wiegman scores as the young midfield shines.
For the first time, Leah Williamson (second from top right) led the team.
Wiegman said earlier this week that she expected “a lot of goals” from her team, knowing they would have a lot of possession against a lower-ranked opponent.
They came through with flying colors.
While it’s tough to judge their real quality against North Macedonia, who are rated 123 places lower than England in the world, a clean sheet, an attack-minded performance, and a comfortable win means Wiegman’s first game was a success.
It should have been a greater win as well.
The fact that England went into halftime with a 3-0 lead and felt disappointed was an indication of their domination.
In the first half, there were many wasted chances, with goalscorer White saying she was “disappointed” not to have scored more.
But, in the end, England’s performance was very encouraging, given their lack of innovation and cohesiveness during the previous two years.
Leah Williamson, who was captaining the team for the first time, Toone, and Georgia Stanway excelled in midfield, while Mead’s good start to the season with Arsenal continued.
Wiegman will undoubtedly need more ruthlessness in the future, but it was an excellent start to her England career.
