Last week, RuneScape developer Jagex announced that the end of Hearts of Ice would be coming within the next couple of weeks. But this year, the currency will also be replaced with some new additions. The goals for the currency’s replacement are being kept under wraps, but Jagex has stated that the currency will be more useful than ever.
RuneScape has announced its plans to revamp the Treasure Hunter system that allowed players to earn gold through real-world Treasure Hunts. Starting in January 2018, players will be able to earn up to 2,000 gold per day through the Treasure Hunter system, which will be set to end on 1st November 2018.
Since the initial triumph of the Treasure Hunter, rune rewards have become the most popular way to train in-game. This is no surprise given that they are easy to understand, accessible, and profitable in real life. However, in order to keep things interesting in RuneScape, the Heart of Ice currency will be phased out in 2017, and Treasure Hunter will be taking over in its place. The new system will be much more lucrative in the long run, with guaranteed payouts for every 10th run, but it may take some time before you can see the full effect.
In RuneScape, the Treasure Hunter lootbox monetization system is about to undergo significant modifications. Starting tomorrow, August 26th, Jagex will test a Gifts of the Creator promotion, in which players who spend a Key may pick between three rewards: a Medium Lamp, a Medium Star, or three Mini Protean Packs. In addition, when players spend a specific amount of Keys, a reward track will provide them with extra rare goods.
Due to the new selective Treasure Hunter system, which essentially eliminates lootbox RNG, Jagex has also stated that the Hearts of Ice money will be phased out over the next several months. This money was created to allow users to freeze out unwanted things from Treasure Hunter, but according to the developers, it is no longer necessary. Hearts of Ice may be exchanged for Oddments at a 5:1 ratio for players who already have the money.
“The goal of Hearts of Ice was to give players greater influence over their possible rewards. Hearts of Ice, on the other hand, has become more redundant and – for many – a low-value currency when compared to something like Oddments, thanks to the adjustments we’ve previously made and those described above. As a result, we believe it is appropriate to simplify Treasure Hunter by eliminating Hearts of Ice and concentrating only on Oddments.”
On Reddit, the reaction seems to be generally favorable, with some applauding (or at the very least shrugging indifferently) the Hearts of Ice modifications and others complaining that the conversion ratio is too low. Others, on the other hand, claim to hold substantial amounts of the money in their digital wallets.
Meanwhile, the Deadman: Reborn PvP competition in Old School RuneScape begins today. The substitution of XP loss on death with a three-lives system, which avoids XP loss on the first two deaths but loses all combat XP and 10% of Skill XP on the third death, is one of the modifications in this version of Deadman. The mode also includes Deadman Sigils, which offer different benefits and a mechanism to prevent high-level players from killing low-level characters.
The competition will continue from now until Friday, September 17th, when the top 2,000 players will compete in 1v1 battle to determine who will split a $32K prize pool.
